During Mr. Travers' absence on vacation leave in May and June last, which was rendered necessary by the state of his health, Mr Smith gratuitously performed the duties of Assistant Postmaster General in addition to his duties as Acting Assistant Registrar General.
When Mr. Travers became Acting Postmaster General on Mr Lister's death he applied for the help of an assistant, the work in the Post Office being extremely heavy, especially when the circumstances connected with the defalcations, about which
